YOUNG ONE (HAYOUNG CHEON)
Boston, Massachusetts ↔ Seoul, Korea

Young one’s practice unfolds as an ongoing dialogue between their body and the world, spanning painting, printmaking, drawing, and spatial installation. Rooted in walking as both metaphor and embodied practice, they invite materials from their own time and space into the work as collaborators. Using found and discarded elements, from organic branches to industrial fragments, they create works that respond to light, wind, and movement, revealing the material before them as a site where countless overlapping times converge in the now.

Their current interest lies in translating sensory experiences of the digital world into physical material. The digital pixel space is slippery, fleeting, and flickering, illusion-like yet it penetrates the brain. Algorithms often intensify cognitive isolation under the guise of convenience. This condition becomes tangible through the visual interplay between rule-bound structures and randomness across their paintings. They respond as if in a game of chess played against the screen, and the surface becomes a tactile skin to be read by the eyes.

With translucent fabric and CNC bed boards, they build vibrant fields that range from microscopic details inviting close looking to macroscopic forms that the body explores. They fill the surface with repeated shapes, symbols, and chromatic traces drawn from the random temporalities of others. Through layering, sanding, and sustained care, they synthesize others’ traces and machine logic with their visual decisions and human labor. These works reflect modes of coexistence in contemporary society, where the future continuously becomes the present.
